How do you get on Boards of Directors to make a difference?

I am 62 and have been trying for years to get on boards to make a difference. With over 30 years in business and education, I believe I can make a substantive difference. However, I find it difficult to find the right connections to achieve that goal. Suggestions, please?

I am a nurse and have heard that doctors for instance get seats on boards by donating money. I believe that it should not be that way, however I have seen that people who can donate the most seem to have more power.

In my town, you start by volunteering with an organization, like the Boys and Girls Club, or join Rotary or one of the other service clubs. Most boards have a combination of check writers and organizers and worker bees and you get asked based on what they need at the time. Sometimes you have to give money too, that is a requirement for the two that I am on; but alot of times they will waive that requirement if you are a worker bee type member.
