Re: Tips For Saving Money in Harsh Economic Times? Remove Spare Tire From Car & Buy Foreclosed House

There are large amounts of foreclosed homes up for sale at auction for cents on the dollar-maybe you can buy a home with what you have already saved. Nobody is going to pay off the loan during the redemption period, because the interest rate and the price paid for the property was too high-it wouldn't make economic sense. If the house is out in the boonies, buy a gas-efficient car such as the Smart Car and add the car loan (and your credit card balances) to your home mortgage loan.

You can reduce the interest rate on a new home loan by paying additional points ( a point is 1% of the loan amount). Mortgage brokers may not like this, but you will reduce your monthly mortgage payments.

Why burn gas to haul a spare tire around? Keep a can of tire goo (and gloves) in your trunk to inflate a punctured tire.

CFC nightlights from Ikea (can't find them anywhere else) suffice for watching TV or showering. Even larger spiral light bulbs save lots of electricity.

If you are unemployed, sew your own clothes, go to the Goodwill, get a bread machine, and bake your own bread. Google "Cinnamon Sunrise Bread."

Posted to: Tips For Saving Money in Harsh Economic Times?

I wish I had some tips for myself! I would love to hear from anyone who is a single parent and needs to stash some cash for Catholic school tuitions and college kitties! We live under LA Unified School District which is terrible and which is not an option for my kids! So the money flows out faster then it flows in. :) Yikes!

Posted to: Tips For Saving Money in Harsh Economic Times?

With the way the economy has been going lately, I'd really love to hear if anyone has any tips on how to remain in control of ones finances and even save (gasp!) a little to buy a house (double gasp!). Even though things are bad, we need to keep positive and look towards the upswing that the future will bring!

Thanks in advance!

Posted to: Tips For Saving Money in Harsh Economic Times?
