Jump to EndTell the WE Empower Community what you think - Is religion a solution or the problem?

I think history would show it to be both... taking both the forms of both a cheerleader for our most divided and cruel actions, and an inspiration for the most brave and selfless...
(a very human dilemma not unique to religion, anti-theistic movements have brought us both some great advancements in science and medicine, but also things like the horrible lethal reign of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge)
So I think it's ultimately not any religious theology or it's absence that is endemic to being part of a positive solution or problem... It's who we are as people.

Religion is a platform for inspiration and faith if it is used with the intention of kindness and love. Religion is a word. It is what you do, and how you share faith with others that is the true reflection of your religion. Religion can be the solution and the problem. It depends on the people or groups involved. If someone is manipulating others or inspiring others for good.

It depends on what you are talking about for religion...
It has become a problem when we take God out of our country when it was founded by our forefathers on God. I think people have used religion as an excuse to blame thing upon. Perhaps all the garbage today is because society has taken God out of the forefront and want's to remove Him completely.
There is a difference between Religion and faith, religion is a bunch of rules and faith is what we beleive in, everyone needs to believe in something, so I think it is the answer to the problems today and always.

I think religion gives God a bad name. While this country may have been founded by several god-fearing men, the men that fled England in favor of America did so, in part, to escape religious tyranny (separation of church and state). No one wants to be told what religion to be, what god to worship, what beliefs are the "correct beliefs".
I believe religion is making things worse, and I am truly afraid of the new-christian that seems to be emerging these days. I was raised Catholic, absconded from the Church soon after my confirmation in 9th grade, but continued believing in God in an evangelical sense (way before I was aware there was an evangelical church). Lately, with the newest uprising of televangelical ministers, Christian-Americans’ sense of societal correctness has faded into the distance in favor of a new breed of "more than enough for me, but less than enough for you -- your faith is lacking" preachers. The Christian-right seems to have lost their sense of caring for those less fortunate: the poor, the sick, and the needy. Welfare wouldn't be needed in America if the Church were caring for the less fortunate as it should. If all church-goers indeed gave 10% of their gross earnings to the Church each week, “welfare” could be taken up by clergy, and the new-Christian wouldn't have to concern themselves with Socialism by the government.
