"The Minerva Scholarship Program seeks to recognize and assist outstanding California women in their pursuit of higher education. The Women’s Conference will award ten $2,500 scholarships in 2008."
The Program
For many students, paying for a college education creates a significant financial worry. The Minerva Scholarship Program was established to meet the financial needs of dedicated college students. A Minerva Scholarship helps ease the burden of tuition cost, or in many cases, provides assistance for other necessities of student life. These expenses include costs associated with purchasing a computer, books, supplies and transportation. The less time a student spends worrying about her finances, the more time she can spend on her studies and furthering her educational goals.
Eligibility Requirements
The program is open to young women who are residents of California and are US Citizens or US Permanent Legal Residents. Scholarship recipients are eligible to re-apply each of their undergraduate years so long as they continue to meet all scholarship eligibility requirements. Applicants must be:
Program Partners
The Minerva Scholarship Program holds partnerships with the following esteemed organizations:
Collaborating with scholarship organizations that reach the widest audience of eligible students in California helps The Women Conference to ensure that the Minerva Scholarship Program reaches a broad group of applicants.
United Negro College Fund: UNCF-the United Negro College Fund-the nation's largest minority education assistance organization, is proud to partner with the Minerva Scholarship Program to help California women get the college education they need and deserve. Recipients of Minerva Scholarships will join thousands of students who are attending college on UNCF scholarships.
Getting a college education is more important than ever, the entry-level credential for almost every professional career or pursuing graduate or professional education. But going to college is more expensive then ever, and just at the time when higher oil and food prices and tightening family budgets are straining the resources of low- and moderate income families across California and around the country.
That's why UNCF is committed to support the educational aspirations of minority students, including the 55,000 students-almost 2,000 of whom are from California-who attend one of UNCF's 39 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and the 8,000 who attend more than 900 colleges and universities around the country, including a wide array of California's public and private institutions, under one the 400 programs UNCF offers.
The Minerva Scholarship Program of The Women's Conference signifies that helping young people get a college education is important to California. Today, they are students, but tomorrow they will be the teachers who will educate our children and grandchildren; the nurses and doctors who will care for us when we are ill; the public servants who will lead our government; and the scientists and researchers whose innovations will make our lives better.
UNCF is proud to join forces with the Minerva Scholarship Program, and with the tens of thousands who will attend The Women's Conference in person or via the Web, to realize the ideal expressed in UNCF's world-famous motto, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."®
